COMMENTS AND PROPOSALS RECEIVED FROM GOVERNMENTS

Whilst some would like to see universal suffrage in 2007 08, others prefer a more measured approach.

The comments, where a corresponding provision is still found of relevance, mean that paragraph 2 should be maintained in the Instrument.

The Working Group took note of those remarks.

Some members recalled that this was the second occasion on which this intention had been declared.

I think that a number of common denominators have emerged this morning, as have some exceptions to those common denominators.

It should be recalled, however, that a number of these organizations had already submitted their comments in 1995 and had no additional comments.

I should like to limit my remarks to the question of anti personnel landmines.

Nevertheless, it is appropriate to proffer a few pertinent observations.

While a wide variety of views was expressed, certain common themes could be discerned.
