The Chinese mainland's coasts are surrounded by the Bohai sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China sea and the South China sea.

This meeting is being held in the wake of the tragedy that affected the countries of South East Asia following the tsunami and the earthquake that shook the coastal countries.

Last year, Hurricane Sandy caused a wall of water to engulf low lying coastal areas on the East Coast of the United States, particularly in New York and New Jersey. Such catastrophic events underscore the vulnerability of coastal regions worldwide to extreme weather events that produce intense storm surges (increased water depth at the coast) and large, powerful waves.

For example, all the 47 incidents of piracy reported for East Africa by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) from 1998 to June 2004 took place in Somali coastal waters.

397. The Action Plan for the Protection and Management of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the South Asian Regional Seas Programme was adopted in March 1995 and came into force in January 1998.

Just to its northwest, in Banda Aceh, 160,000 lives were lost in the 2004 tsunami. Now, geologists say, the fault that triggered that tsunami is most likely to rupture farther south, putting low lying coastal towns like Padang, with a population of 900,000, at high risk of a major earthquake and tsunami within the next 30 years.

In Haiti, the eastern coastal city of Gonaïves was the most severely affected 1,500 people were killed and 300,000 were injured or suffered property damage.

Agency schools located in the coastal regions of the Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip were designated as participants in UNESCO apos s south eastern Mediterranean project for the preservation of the sea environment, due to commence later in 1997.
