China s Coming Growth Tests

All of this is driving exponentially growing economic progress.

BEIJING In the 35 years since China s transition to a market economy began, the country has grown at an average rate of 9.8 an explosive and unprecedented rise. But there are signs that the Chinese miracle is coming to an end or at least that the country s economic growth is slowing.

Over the last 18 quarters, annualized growth in real consumer demand has averaged a mere 0.7 , compared to a 3.6 growth trend in the decade before the crisis erupted. Never before has the American consumer been this weak for this long.
