Since 1993, the age standardized mortality rates for women in the target age group have declined steadily.

147. The Committee is deeply concerned about the effect of the HIV AIDS pandemic and the very high rate of infection among young women, who comprise 84 per cent of those infected in the 15 to 19 year age group and 55 per cent of the 20 to 29 year age group.

Women account for 53 of all reported new HIV cases and the ones diagnosed at a younger age the median age of HIV diagnosis is 30 years for women and 34 years for men.
