21. According to the United Nations Joint and Co sponsored Programme on HIV AIDS (UNAIDS), about 5 to 10 per cent of HIV infections are the result of contamination through drug injection equipment.

The Office, as a co sponsor of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV AIDS (UNAIDS), is developing a coordinated United Nations system wide strategy for the prevention of HIV infection among actual and potential victims of human trafficking and for the care and treatment of HIV infected trafficked persons.

UNICEF was encouraged to work with the UNAIDS secretariat to intensify HIV prevention by developing an action plan based on the UNAIDS Policy Position Paper, Intensifying HIV Prevention .
