21.17 The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia comprises 13 member States.

The involvement of civil society organizations in the formulation of these general public policies took place mostly through the National Sustainable Development Council and the National Council for Economic and Social Planning.

A State not member of the Commission may submit proposals in accordance with rule 69, paragraph 3, of the rules of procedure of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

Noting the relatively poor representation of experts from developing countries and countries with economies in transition in the work of the Committee and the need to ensure their wider participation in its work,

The project will be implemented by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in collaboration with ESCAP, ECLAC and ECA.

Moreover, at least five countries in the ECLAC region and seven more with transition economies in the region of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) have been identified by the respective commissions as deserving of special consideration for official development assistance grants because of the persistent economic difficulties that they face on top of their very low levels of per capita income.

We believe it important for the concerned regional commissions of the United Nations the Economic Commission for Europe and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific to strengthen their work to assist economic development in Central Asia, with a view to the greater and broader involvement of the countries of the region in international economic relations and investment cooperation.

The following United Nations bodies and intergovernmental organizations were represented by observers International Organization of la Francophonie, New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), Organization for Economic Cooperation for Development (OECD), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Responses were received from 40 countries spread over five continents and from the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

The Conference commended the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) for its key role in strengthening economic and commercial cooperation among Member States.

Vienna NGO Committee on the Family Since 1998, ICAA also chairs this Committee, which is an important international networking body for family related issues and closely co operates with the Programme on the Family within the Department of Economics and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Commission on Social Development.
