IV. Building a durable peace and promoting economic growth

In many developing countries the growth in per capita gross domestic product had been small, with average levels remaining, in real terms, the same as in 1980.

Without trade, there can be no sustained equitable economic growth. Without economic growth, tax revenues will not grow. And without tax revenues, improved public services are not sustainable.

Thirdly, an open and equitable international trading system is indispensable for sustainable growth and development.

The support of the entire population for the peace process and the programme for economic growth is essential.

Economists have struggled with the tradeoff between growth and equity for centuries. What is the nature of the tradeoff?

The growth rate has dropped to 1.2 per cent, while the population growth rate has remained at 3 per cent.

Cooperation should be sustainable and lead to equitable economic growth in countries.

I). The investment rate of 18.6 per cent in 1997 for Africa remained well below the level necessary to sustain satisfactory growth.

The economies of the developing countries have been growing, on average, more rapidly than those of the developed countries and per capita incomes in developing countries have been rising, particularly in China and India.

Is Inequality Inhibiting Growth?

Application of the principle of quarterly indexation has allowed for constant growth in the level of the minimum wage at a higher rate than that of the average wage in the national economy.

The increased importance attributed to peace and security had resulted in a substantial increase in the peacekeeping budget.

Although some developing countries had achieved remarkable levels of growth, the majority of them had failed to achieve a sustained pattern of growth in real terms.

Public deficits must be brought down to sustainable levels on a permanent basis, with a view to stopping the escalation of public debt.

The increase in the number of posts is due to the increase in peacekeeping activities.

The economy has grown, on average, 4.2 per cent per year.

It would be extremely unfair to perpetuate a situation in which developing countries whose economies were growing at rates of between 5 and 10 per cent were required to pay assessment increases of 50, 100 or 200 per cent.

In its resolution 58 206 of 23 December 2003, the General Assembly reaffirmed that gender equality was of fundamental importance for achieving sustained economic growth and sustainable development and that investing in the development of women and girls had a multiplier effect, in particular on productivity, efficiency and sustained economic growth.

22. Owing to the uneven domestic distribution of the fruits of economic growth, major problems of poverty, serious social inequities, gender inequalities and unsustainable population growth still remained.

Peacekeeping

The fundamental goal of these summits is to put the world on a course toward sustainable development, or inclusive and sustainable growth. This means growth that raises average living standards benefits society across the income distribution, rather than just the rich and protects, rather than wrecks, the natural environment.

On the other hand sustainable forest management is in a strong position to foster sustained economic growth, helping to create employment opportunities that contribute to the foundations for peace.

The allowance is increased by a percentage of the growth in the average monthly wage between the quarters preceding the date of indexation.

Investments in infrastructure and human capital are the bedrock for increasing average productivity and for ensuring high growth over a sustained period of time.

Indeed, as the General Assembly had reaffirmed in its resolution 56 188, gender equality was of fundamental importance for achieving sustained economic growth.

World steel production has been increasing since 1994, and since 2001 the rate of growth has accelerated.

It maintained its forecast for growth of 1.8 in 2018.

The second is for continued population, human population expansion.

But, in developing countries, where only sustained growth can lift people out of poverty, limiting it cannot be the answer. The alternative is to change the growth model in order to lighten the impact of higher levels of economic activity on natural resources and the environment.

The Centre is working to maintain that level of growth in 2006 and 2007 and will ensure that any increase is achieved without compromising the quality and utility of the assistance provided.

In the last two years, credit grew almost twice as fast as GDP, and total social financing grew even faster. Yet GDP growth slowed considerably from an annual average of 10.2 in 2002 2011 suggesting that China may be moving closer to a medium to low speed growth path.

On balance, then, the multispeed growth patterns of the past decade are likely to continue. Even as the developed economies experience an extended period of below trend growth, the emerging economies will remain an important growth engine.
