Neuroscientist Michael Merzenich looks at one of the secrets of the brain's incredible power its ability to actively re wire itself. He's researching ways to harness the brain's plasticity to enhance our skills and recover lost function.

And yet in two million years the human brain has nearly tripled in mass, going from the one and a quarter pound brain of our ancestor here, Habilis, to the almost three pound meatloaf that everybody here has between their ears.

But more than that, your brain gets measurably bigger.

I have come to think it's one of the most powerful brain systems on earth for both great joy and great sorrow.
