To encourage employers to consider new female apprentices in non traditional occupations (including agriculture, building, engineering and automotive industries), an additional special incentive of AUS 1,100 is available for employers who commence a woman in an eligible Certificate II to IV level new apprenticeship in a declared non traditional occupation.

2. Vocational and technical education

Education in a secondary vocational school usually lasts for three years, exceptionally four years, or two years for less complex vocations.

As a rule, German is the language of instruction at schools offering general education, at vocational schools and at universities.

Pupil retention programmes and vocational training for drop outs should be encouraged.

Higher vocational education in the country is performed on the basis of general secondary, beginning vocational and secondary vocational education, and colleges of higher vocational schools and in State institutions of higher vocational education, including private institutions.

In the period 1992 1994 a change in the ratio of trade schools to general secondary schools took place.

However, the majority of secondary school graduates of technical and vocational schools are boys (59 ).

In 1993 out of 90,921 secondary school graduates 34,645 of them graduated from general secondary school, 27,392 from professional technical schools and 28,884 from vocational schools and art schools.

Other initiatives that address stereotypes include CD ROMs that highlight career options in manufacturing, boating and aerospace industries, with case studies of women discussing their employment experiences in these industries and the New Apprenticeship advertising campaign, which showed women in non traditional trades.

In addition, an integrated series of Career Support Programmes has been launched, including career planning workshops, a career information lecture series, as well as a library of career support self study materials.
