Members of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda have committed rapes.

There was increasing optimism among Burundi refugees following the recent elections with the rate of returns from the United Republic of Tanzania doubling in comparison to the previous months.

This outcome is the result of joint efforts by the international community, the African Union, the Regional Initiative and, above all, the people of Burundi themselves, who have demonstrated great political maturity in choosing peace and democracy.

The independent expert commends and supports the efforts of United Nations agencies in Burundi, in particular OHCHRB and ONUB, the international community, as well as civil society to ensure better protection and promotion of human rights, and encourage them to strengthen their coordination and cooperation in this field.
