89. The President of the Republic has the following powers, among others

164. Authority to denounce treaties is vested in the President of the Republic, who is required to report thereon to Congress.

The opposition parties also strongly objected to the declaration by President Gbagbo regarding the use of special powers, noting that, according to the ruling by President Mbeki, it should be limited to the issue of presidential eligibility.

Only a little more than three years ago, the Secretary General, Kofi Annan, handed over power to our elected President.

Indeed, the Forces Nouvelles (FN) in an open letter to the Mediator expressed their strong reservations over the further recourse to the use of the extraordinary powers of article 48, which the President had used in June to authorize the candidacy of Mr. Alassane Ouatarra for the scheduled Presidential elections of October 2005.

President Bush recently welcomed Palestinian Authority President Abbas to the White House.

Any draft or proposed amendment relating to the election of the President of the Republic, the exercise of the presidential mandate, the vacancy of the Office of the President of the Republic or the procedure for revising the current Constitution must be subjected to a referendum.

He may, moreover, be removed by the President (according to the CNS draft he would be elected by Parliament and could not be dismissed by the President).

The executive power is exercised by the President who is elected for a term of five years by universal suffrage.

The United States was doing just that in 1995, for the first time, the United States President had invoked his powers under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act to target the Cali cartel.

The Interim President gave priority to electrical energy.

It also commends the continued and decisive efforts of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Thabo Mbeki and Mamadou Tandja, and reiterates its full support for them.

On 27 August 1828, General Simón Bolívar assumed supreme power, under the title of Liberator and President.

A single article stipulates that, Accusation of the President of committing grand treason or any other criminal act may be made upon a motion submitted by at least one third of members of the People's Assembly and approved by two thirds. The president is then suspended from carrying out his duties, and the vice president fills in until the accusation is resolved.

The power is in the system.

The President retains final review of convictions and sentences.

The Sudan adopted a transitional Constitution in July 2005, and the President and Vice President will exercise their mandate in conformity with its provisions.

7. Affirms that the Office of the High Commissioner remains the focal point for coordinating system wide attention for human rights, democracy and the rule of law

Chirac s shortening of the presidential term from seven to five years has, paradoxically, resulted in an even greater concentration of presidential power. The problem with this omnipotent presidency is that the qualities needed in order to be elected are not necessarily those required to master the art of government, with its mixture of distance, patience, serenity, and modesty, in addition to energy and activism.
