None of the Millennium Development Goals will be achieved without appropriate and extensive use of science and technology and without a focused science, technology and innovation policy.

Its objective was to develop a strategy for the role of science and technology in development and to give greater impetus to the application of science and technology in United Nations programmes.

Science and technology can be made to work for the poor by designing systems that utilize conventional science and technologies, such as those of the green revolution, and emerging technologies, such as information and communication technologies and biotechnology.
