The intensely competitive environment for media access and coverage, the necessity for speedy communications, the need to respond almost instantaneously to breaking news, the exponential growth in the scope and depth of reach of this new medium, all make it imperative that the United Nations, and in particular the Department of Public Information, embrace it as a central communications system and delivery vehicle for its outreach.

Emphasis will be placed on taking advantage of the latest technology, in both the traditional and electronic media, including the Internet, to disseminate information, directly and instantaneously to the news media worldwide.

The optical disk system, while not yet available at all centres, has contributed greatly to the enhancement of services to the media, researchers and the public at large.

The Broadcasting Services Act establishes a regulatory framework within which the Australian Communication and Media Authority, an independent statutory body, develops programme standards and assists broadcasters (commercial, community, subscription) and other service providers (e.g. narrowcast services) to develop codes of practice.

United Nations media and public information activities

The News and Media Division of the Department of Public Information covers sport related initiatives on the United Nations News Service on the web and other outlets, and the Internet Service has assisted in setting up and maintaining a website for the International Year of Sport and Physical Education (http www.un.org sport2005).

The IPS news network covers over 100 countries, and the service is distributed daily in seven languages and regularly in 10 others to media, civil society and the international community.
