Background The Desertification Convention Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi arid, and dry sub humid areas.

It has a total area of 318 million hectares which represents 6 per cent of the world apos s arid, semi arid and dry sub humid lands (ASALS) and 25 per cent of Africa apos s ASALS.

Parties expected an increase in hyper arid, arid or semi arid areas under all climate change scenarios.

The request for an assessment of the extent of land degradation in drylands came from the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), out of which the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (LADA) project was conceived.

The new kit labelled A creative approach to environmental education in drylands and highlands will be targeted at primary and secondary schools in dryland and mountainous countries.

Formally, the MA definition encompasses all lands where the climate is classified as dry sub humid, semi arid, arid or hyper arid.

Impressive lists of projects related to arid and semi arid zones of the Africa region are available in all areas.

A programme has been launched by one other country with the support of the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the International Programme for Arid Land Crops (IPALAC) in order to develop new farming methods and practices in arid areas.
