Economics is really a toolkit with multiple models each a different, stylized representation of some aspect of reality. One s skill as an economist depends on the ability to pick and choose the right model for the situation.

And then it will have what economists call external effects on a local economy.

In fact, I even talk about us moving from what we often call now the knowledge economy to what we might call a computational knowledge economy, where high level math is integral to what everyone does in the way that knowledge currently is.

Economists are now awakening to the realization that the most interesting questions they face were always beyond the reach of Marshall s toolkit. Clearly, economics if it is to succeed and progress must be very different in a generation from what it is today.

It has been generations since economists Robert Solow and Moses Abramovitz pointed out that Marshall s toolkit is a poor aid for understanding modern economic growth. The real sources of growth are not to be found in supplies and demands and the allocation of scarce resources to alternative uses, but in technological and organizational change about which economists have too little to say.

But the book does not tell us what depression economics is supposed to replace. So let me try my hand at defining non depression economics

The outcome will be messy. But the economics profession will also become more diverse and dynamic and our children s economics will be healthier as a result.

Now I'm an economist, I'm not a doctor, but I see the God complex around me all the time in my fellow economists.
