And, sure enough, with all the other pressures on the river, like sand mining, for example, very, very heavy cultivation all the way down to the river's edge, not allowing the animals to breed anymore, we're looking at even more problems building up for the gharial, despite the early good intentions.

Junkies find veins in their toes when the ones in their arms and their legs collapse. Developing tar sands and coal shale is the equivalent. Here are just a few of the investments that I personally think make sense.

EDMONTON Calm discussion of the environment nowadays is about as plausible as reasoned dialogue on witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. Consider the hyperbolic debate over the Keystone XL pipeline, which would funnel oil from Canada s Athabasca tar sands in northeastern Alberta to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.

A NAFTA 2.0 could focus on areas that were originally excluded, such as labor mobility and energy. The development of Canadian oil sands, the shale energy revolution in the US, and the opening of Mexico s oil sector to foreign investment imply the biggest geopolitical shift since the collapse of communism.

This double whammy can be mitigated only by innovative water management and conservation, and by developing nontraditional supply sources. As in the oil and gas sector where tapping unconventional sources, such as shale and tar sands, has proved a game changer the water sector must adopt all unconventional options, including recycling wastewater and desalinating ocean and brackish waters.

These are the Athabasca tar sands, and there's an enormous amount first of mining, the largest trucks in the world are working here, and then you've got to pull out this black sludge, which is basically oil that doesn't flow. It's tied to the sand. And then you've got to use a lot of steam to separate it, which only works at today's oil prices.

At the Headwaters itself, Shell Canada has plans to extract methane gas from coal seams that underly a million acres, fracking the coal with hundreds of millions of gallons of toxic chemicals, establishing perhaps as many as 6,000 wellheads, and eventually a network of roads and pipelines and flaring wellheads, all to generate methane gas that most likely will go east to fuel the expansion of the tar sands.
