Non energy GDP growth from 1998 2005 is projected at 6.5 per cent, which rises to 9.5 per cent if energy and industrial mega projects are included.

Exports of commodities, such as energy and base metals, have also increased strongly.

During this period, contributions to regular resources grew by 12 per cent, to other resources regular by 57 per cent and to other resources emergency by 63 per cent.

(b) Use of renewable sources of energy as rural growth impulses

The expansion of renewable energy production also holds great potential for boosting economic growth. Over the past decade, 370,000 new jobs have been created in the sector, and exports of renewable energy technology are rising rapidly, totaling roughly 30 billion from 2006 to 2008.

Experts foresee a slight decrease in the annual growth rate of energy demand and declining energy intensity, but economic and population growth combined with increased urbanization will result in an estimated growth in demand of around 1.7 per cent each year for the next 25 years, unless major breakthroughs in energy efficiency measures are achieved.

It is projected that world energy demand will continue to grow rapidly in the coming decades.

Growth in energy and energy intensive industries will fuel additional demand, output, and employment across a wide swath of supporting activities, including transportation, construction, and professional services. Overall, McKinsey estimates that growth in shale energy could add 2 4 to annual GDP and create up to 1.7 million jobs by 2020.

In addition to the growth in other resources, significant growth in regular resources programme expenditures is projected for 2006 2009.

C. How to increase the share of alternative

Growth and redistribution generated resources should be utilized by society to provide services for poor and vulnerable persons that enhance their capabilities.

Enhancing energy conservation and efficiency are key for decoupling economic growth from increased energy use, and thus for driving sustainable development worldwide.

This increase is due to increased expenditures on both country and regional projects.

C. How to increase the share of alternative sources of energy in the energy systems

Remittance flows have become an increasing source of foreign exchange for many developing countries and a potential source of development finance.

Fast growing global energy demands, an increased emphasis on the security of energy supplies and the risk of climate change are driving a renewed consideration of nuclear power.

Consumption of energy, and its associated emissions, continue to grow to meet development needs.

Global demands for energy are growing rapidly, and although most growth is in developing countries and countries with economies in transition seeking to supply more lighting, cooking, heat, mechanical power, transport, communication and other energy services that drive development, demand for energy is also increasing in the industrialized countries.

In particular, there is a need to de link natural resource consumption from economic growth, so that growth in the economy does not lead to a concomitant growth in natural resource consumption.

Since 1990, wind generated power has grown 26 per year and solar a phenomenal 48 . But the growth has been from almost nothing to slightly more than almost nothing.
