In section A of chapter I global developments are summarized by type of drug, that is, opiates, cocaine, cannabis and psychotropic and controlled precursor substances.

The United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) launched a drug control strategy and an integrated four year programme in March 1997 comprising the following modules capacity building for drug control a drug control monitoring system poppy crop reduction and demand reduction support.

A situational analysis of the pharmaceutical sector was carried out by staff of the Ministry of Health under the supervision and assistance of WHO, and a list of essential drugs which closely adheres to the WHO model list has been drafted.

These activities include joint research projects of selected generic drugs and biopharmaceuticals, as well as the creation of a young professional programme, designed to provide conceptual and practical training in the biopharmaceutical industry, for practitioners from developing countries.

14.2 The activities of the Drug Control Programme were funded largely from the regular budget and extrabudgetary resources, comprising the budget of the Fund of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and the budget for programme support cost.

43. The Board noted that national execution accounted for the smallest proportion of the Programme s project allocations.
