Viet Nam War, 1957 to 1975

There was the Vietnam War. There was black liberation.

And yet, roundly defeated in the end by the war in Vietnam.

It was 1971, the Vietnam War was going on, and I'm like, Oh my God!

Agent Orange was a defoliant used during the Vietnam War to deny cover to the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese army.

America was jolted by the anti Vietnam movement, the Civil Rights movement.

With Vietnam s emergence as a pivotal player in Asia, we are able to view the Vietnam War in the context of the US strategy of global containment, which led it to defend not only South Vietnam, but also South Korea and Taiwan the three fronts, as Mao Zedong put it. Then and now, Vietnam was the locus of a struggle between the vision of a monolithic Asia and that of an Asia that is open internally and to the world.

As to the States which sent military forces to Viet Nam , the question whether the Viet Nam war had any effect on their treaties needs a closer examination.

The war in Vietnam was raging, the Civil Rights movement was under way and pictures had a powerful influence on me.

More Medals of Honor were given for the indiscriminate slaughter of women and children than for any battle in World War One, World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan.

Enthusiasm for America s self proclaimed mission to fight for freedom around the world was dented, not least in the US itself, by the bloody catastrophe of Vietnam. An estimated two million Vietnamese died in a war that did not free them.
