Alloyed steels, which are sometimes also called special steels and may be considered specialty products, contain small portions of alloying elements such as chromium, cobalt, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, silicon, tungsten or vanadium.

In recent years the economy has suffered because of a depressed international demand for nickel, the principal source of export earnings.

The United States imports an average of 130,000 tons of raw nickel per year.

The outlook for the nickel market is also dependent on global economic growth, and thus on future levels of activity in East Asia, since in common with lead and zinc nickel is heavily dependent on a single industrial activity, namely stainless steel, which alone accounts for about 60 per cent of world consumption.

And these were steel, mica, plastic, copper and nickel.

The Territory has more than 20 per cent of the world s known nickel resources.

Currently, there are only 8 mines that are in production in the country 4 diamond mines, 2 copper nickel mines, 1 gold mine, 1 soda ash mine and 1 coal mine.

It is these laws, policies and practices that attract mining companies to prospect for and subsequently exploit the diamonds, copper nickel, coal, gold and soda ash deposits.

If the stated goals of the three major metallurgical projects were achieved, New Caledonia would produce 1.5 million tons of nickel ore in the period 2009 to 2019.

The three provinces have each signed up to acquire a total share of 10 per cent in Goro Nickel.

7. New Caledonia s economy is dominated by the nickel industry.

Some of the declines, especially those of the prices of copper, nickel, zinc and lead, were particularly large (see table 1) as the depressed demand for those commodities has been compounded by problems of oversupply.

New Caledonia has benefited from higher global nickel prices in 2004, partly as a result of strong demand from China.

The third project by the Canadian company, Inco, for a new nickel mining and smelting project at Goro, South Province, resumed in early 2005, following long delays.

Nickel mining is also important in the province, but is mostly concentrated in Morowali, on the opposite coast of Sulawesi.

Wide ranging consultations were continuing and great progress had been made in developing the infrastructure of the island and the nickel mining industry.
