I wish to reiterate that the only illegal occupation in Cyprus is the 35 year old usurpation and occupation by the Greek Cypriot side of the seat of Government of the once bi national Republic of Cyprus.

We take this opportunity to remind the Secretary General and through him the Commission on Human Rights of the continuing grave violations of human rights of the people of Cyprus by the Turkish forces in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus ever since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the continuing occupation of 37 per cent of its territory for which violations no effective remedy for the victims has been provided by Turkey.

The Government of Cyprus noted that since the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the consequent occupation of 37 per cent of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, about 200,000 Greek Cypriots who were living in that part of Cyprus were forced by the Turkish occupation forces to leave their homes and properties and became refugees in their own country they continue to be prevented by the Turkish forces from returning to their homes in the northern part of Cyprus still occupied by Turkey.

Roads 42. The building of highways and bypass roads in the occupied territories has had serious economic repercussions on the livelihood of the population since they are built on land taken from Palestinians.

Israel was still the occupying Power, controlling air space, land borders and the sea.

I wish to underline that the only occupation in Cyprus is the 35 year old usurpation and occupation of the seat of government of the once bi communal Republic of Cyprus by the Greek Cypriot regime in the South.
