At its fifty third session, the General Assembly will need to fill the vacancies that will arise upon the expiry of the terms of office of Ms. Ashford and Mr. Haugh.

3. Since the terms of office of Ms. Ashford and Mr. Haugh will expire on 31 December 1998, it will be necessary for the General Assembly at its fifty third session to appoint two persons to fill the resulting vacancies.

5. Having obtained the required majority, Mr. Kevin Haugh (Ireland) and Ms. Deborah Taylor Ashford (United States of America) were recommended for appointment as members of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal for a three year term of office beginning on 1 January 1999.

In response to questions about the anaerobic degradation of appliances in landfills, Mr. Ashford said that research was only in its early stages and that it was important to establish the nature of the degradation products before looking at what could be done to look at enhancing the process of anaerobic degradation.

The co chair of the task force on foam end of life issues, Mr. Paul Ashford, introduced the task force's report and reviewed the makeup and mandate of the task force, noting that the thrust of the report was an update on information relating to the technical efficacy and efficiency of options for end of life management and destruction of foams and related costs.
