In December, during the World Forum on Sustainable Tourism and Childhood, held in Bahia, The Ministry of Tourism launched a campaign to combat the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents with the slogan Become aware.

A keynote address was delivered by Jan Pronk, Minister of Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, and the following guest speakers also addressed the plenary Vigdis Finnbogadottir (Iceland) Bahia Hariri (Lebanon) Eusebio Leal (Cuba) Lisbeth Palme (Sweden) David Puttnam (United Kingdom) Rita Süssmuth (Germany).

The Ibero American Summits of Heads of State and Government held in Guadalajara, Mexico (1991), Madrid (1992) and Salvador, Bahia, Brazil (1993) laid the foundations of the Ibero American community and recognized that democracy and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are the pillars of that community.

Actions are under way involving the Jequitinhonha Valley Development Agency for the Meso Region of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri rivers, in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia the São Paulo Municipal Government the Sao Paulo's ABC metropolitan region Inter Municipal Consortium from the ABC metropolitan region and the Salvador Municipal Government.

In its decision SS.VII 3 of 15 February 2002, the Governing Council decided that there was a need further to develop a strategic approach to international chemicals management (SAICM) and endorsed the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety's Bahia Declaration and Priorities for Action beyond 2000 as the foundation of that approach.

This may well have an impact on future regional political coordination, although Mexico s future membership has not been ruled out. (Furthermore, Mexican President Felipe Calderón s participation in the Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development in Bahia in December 2008 suggests that Mexico has not turned its back on the possibility of coordinating regional positions.)

As shown by the increasing number of applications submitted to the United Nations Public Service Awards, successful practices are initiated both in developed and developing countries and have been transferred from the latter to developed countries (e.g., the integrated public services system launched by the state of Bahia in Brazil was adopted by Portugal and others).

53. At the summit of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries,2 which took place in San Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, on 17 and 18 July 1997, the Ministers reaffirmed their support to the self determination of the people of East Timor and welcomed the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Bishop Belo and José Ramos Horta.

A few days beforehand, there was a public call by Bahia Hariri, a Member of Parliament and sister of the former Prime Minister, urging people back to the central district of Beirut so as to re stimulate economic activity in the commercial hub of the city and to overcome the atmosphere of anxiety that prevailed after the spate of bombings.

(b) Further develop a strategic approach to international chemicals management based on the Bahia Declaration and Priorities for Action beyond 2000 of the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety by 2005, and urge that the United Nations Environment Programme, the Intergovernmental Forum, other international organizations dealing with chemical management and other relevant international organizations and actors closely cooperate in this regard, as appropriate
