Many of you will know this TEDster, Danny Gilbert, whose book, actually, I got it through the TED book club.

The President (spoke in French) The General Assembly will proceed to the election of a member of the International Court of Justice for the unexpired term of office of Judge and former President Gilbert Guillaume, whose resignation took effect on 11 February 2005.

In a letter dated 4 November 2004, addressed to the States parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice, the Secretary General drew attention to the fact that a seat on the Court had become vacant as a result of the resignation, with effect from 11 February 2005, of Judge Gilbert Guillaume (France).

This morning, the Security Council and the General Assembly will proceed independently with the election, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Statute of the Court, for the purpose of filling the vacancy which occurred on 11 February 2005 owing to the resignation of Judge and former President of the Court, Mr. Gilbert Guillaume of France.

According to procedural explanations given by the President of the Council during the informal consultations held on 14 February, and in compliance with its resolution 1571 (2004), the Security Council held a formal meeting simultaneously with the General Assembly to elect a judge of the International Court of Justice in order to fill the vacancy which occurred on 11 February due to the resignation of Judge and former President of the Court, Gilbert Guillaume of France.

By a letter dated 11 October 2004, a certified copy of which was forwarded to the attention of the Secretary General under the cover of a letter of the same date from the President of the International Court of Justice, Judge and former President Gilbert Guillaume informed the President of the Court, pursuant to article 13, paragraph 4, of the Statute of the Court, of his resignation as a member of the Court effective 11 February 2005.
