The Indus civilization does not belong to just the South Indians or the North Indians or the Pakistanis it belongs to all of us.

Indians have generally felt free to be themselves, within their dynamic and diverse society. It is that freedom that the BJP s representatives and followers are challenging today.

And the answer to it, I think, can be found down in the Copper Canyons of Mexico, where there's a tribe, a reclusive tribe, called the Tarahumara Indians.

So we have come a long way from those days where the telephone has become an instrument of empowerment, and really has changed the way Indians think of technology.

And the fact that the demographics are in our favor, because we are the only young country in an aging world, makes globalization all the more attractive to Indians.

As an ethnic Sindhi, I feel an affinity to both. When I attend international gatherings, I am amazed how easily and naturally Indians and Pakistanis gravitate toward each other.

While China seeks strategic depth in Burma, India s interests there are now reanimated by the international community s opening to a country that appears to yearn for the same democratic freedoms that Indians possess. And, in Aung San Suu Kyi, who studied in New Delhi (as did her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, who was Ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960), Burma possesses a charismatic moral leader who reminds Indians of their country s own founders.

The cameras would roll, Indians would smile, and France would be treated to a Bollywood spectacle beyond its wildest dreams. And if it s too late for the wedding, there s always the reception.

So, if you ask Indians whether their governance is marked by widespread corruption, they will answer with gusto yes! But their exuberance biases India s global ranking relative to more empirically minded countries.

Again, after having lived for more than 200 years under the East India Company and under imperial rule, Indians had a very natural reaction towards globalization believing it was a form of imperialism.

So, the Mumbai Indians flew in Dwayne Bravo from Trinidad and Tobago, overnight. And when he had to go back to represent the West Indies, they asked him, When do you have to reach?

The economic booms in China and India have helped to reduce global inequality. Over the two last decades, masses of Indians and Chinese have closed the gap (in relative terms) with the rich world.
