In April, Human Rights Watch issued a report on the treatment of garment workers in Bangladesh. The report, prompted by the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse, in which more than 1,100 people died and over 2,000 were injured, highlighted poor working conditions, inadequate building inspections, weak labor laws, and the need for fairer wage practices and legal benefits.

I should like to remind members that the representatives of Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali, Nepal and the Niger announced earlier that the candidates from their respective countries, namely, Mr. Salifou Fomba (Mali), Mr. Bouba Mahamane (Niger), Mr. Cheick Dimkinsedo Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso), Ms. Indira Rana (Nepal) and Mr. Tilahun Teshome (Ethiopia) had decided to withdraw their names from the list of candidates.

She directed my attention to Jordanian made films about the subordination of women inside the home, and to Rana Husseini s powerful book on honor killings, Murder in the Name of Honor . But her implicit message was that these critical examinations of women s inequality in the Arab world are most enlightening when they are created by women s advocates from within that culture, rather than sensationalized or superficial versions of the problem created in the West.

More recently, the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh earlier this year, which killed more than 1,000 people, posed a similar question for the garment industry. Associated British Foods (ABF), which is both a major sugar producer and the owner of the retail clothing chain Primark, took responsibility for its suppliers by signing up, along with 80 other clothing brands, to a legally binding building safety agreement supported by trade unions and the Bangladeshi government.
