2004 A major quake on the western coast of Indonesia's Aceh province in northern Sumatra on Dec. 26 triggered a tsunami that struck 14 countries, killing 226,000 people along Indian Ocean coastline, more than half of them in Aceh.

In this regard, in the last five years, a total of 1,506 young East Timorese have been employed in the business sector in 10 other provinces in Indonesia, namely South, West, Central and East Kalimantan, Jambi, Riau, Lampung, South Sumatra, South Sulawesi and Maluku.

But Japan s long history of earthquakes and tsunamis and now advanced forecasting technology had made people complacent.

In response to the request made by affected States, we began an airlift of Russian equipment and medical staff on 9 January for deployment on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, and a field hospital and health and anti epidemic teams were sent to Thailand and Sri Lanka.

The provinces of Aceh and northern Sumatra in Indonesia were the worst affected areas but the impact of the disaster on gross domestic product (GDP) growth is likely to be greatest in the smaller economies, such as Maldives and Sri Lanka, owing to their heavy reliance on tourism and fisheries.

In Indonesia, in the Tanah Datar District of West Sumatra, decentralization was carried out in 2001, and as a result policies were implemented by the District Education Department in Tanah Datar to increase the quality of teaching in schools with the aim of improving the condition of students from poor families.

That level of support enables us in particular to make a substantial contribution to the United Nations flash appeal for the afflicted region, to continue to match the generous donations being made by individual New Zealanders to the appeals for funding and to target New Zealand aid funding to Aceh, on Sumatra.

The situation on Sumatra is similarly grim, and it is perhaps even worse in the Maldives, Laccadives, Andamans, and Nikobar islands, where not only fishermen and boats were lost, but harbours were ruined. Along the coast of the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, some 30 of the fishery capacity was lost.

Mr. WIRENGJURIT (Indonesia) Mr. President, on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Indonesia, allow me to express my appreciation and sincere gratitude for the sentiment and sympathy extended to us by all members of the CD on the tragic natural disaster that devastated the island of Nias, north of Sumatra, a few days ago.

Operation Solidarity, launched by President Xanana Gusmão following the Tsunami which on 26 December 2004 hit the Indonesian provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, and the strong solidarity shown by individual citizens from across Timor Leste through their donations to the victims of that natural disaster in Indonesia also attest to the tangible progress made in reconciliation between the peoples and the Governments of the two countries.
