The Netherlands, where I was born, has perhaps been divided by the debate over multiculturalism more than any other country. The murder of the filmmaker Theo van Gogh two and a half years ago by an Islamist assassin has incited a wrenching debate about the country s entrenched culture of tolerance and easy access for asylum seekers.

The violence in France, fueled by staggering unemployment and ruthless policing, reflects the utter failure of the French model of social integration. But violence elsewhere in Europe, such as the London bombings of July and the brutal murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh on the streets of Amsterdam in November 2004, had already made Europe s failure to integrate its minorities painfully clear.

There have been several episodes in recent years in which perceptions of blasphemy have led to threats of violence or actual killings, starting with the publication of Salman Rushdie s novel The Satanic Verses more than two decades ago, and including the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten s cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. In the Netherlands, Theo Van Gogh was murdered on an Amsterdam sidewalk in retaliation for his film Submission, which criticized Islam s treatment of women.

No less an authority than the former Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the question of torture, Mr. Theo van Boven, accepted in his 2002 report to the General Assembly the use of such assurances in certain circumstances, urging States to procure an unequivocal guarantee that the persons concerned will not be subjected to torture or any other forms of ill treatment upon return (A 57 173, para. 35).

The truth is, women, you've had our back on this issue for a very long time, starting with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring to Theo Colborn's Our Stolen Future to Sandra Steingraber's books Living Downstream and Having Faith.
