The Earth was struck by an asteroid, a huge amount of debris was jettisoned into the atmosphere.

It is urgent that States reduce the amount of marine debris by implementing national, regional and subregional prevention and rehabilitation programmes.

The amount of existing debris is considered to far exceed that currently identified by NASA (at 13,000 large pieces), especially at the most heavily used Lower Earth Orbit.

The view was expressed that the IADC space debris mitigation guidelines could be endorsed by the Subcommittee as the technical background to the document on space debris mitigation being developed in the framework of the Working Group on Space Debris.

In 2002, the Inter Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), a small group of entities capable of launching satellites, had been invited to present proposals to the Subcommittee on the mitigation of debris production.

This completed the third year that the Haystack Orbital Debris Radar, operated for NASA by MIT apos s Lincoln Laboratory, has measured and monitored such debris.

Man made sources of debris included anything that had been put into orbit and was no longer useful, most debris being pieces smaller than 10 centimetres in diameter or tiny particles.

NASA is considering firing atmospheric gases to reduce the speed of the debris so that it would de orbit. Europe is looking at launching a satellite with a large net to capture the debris and it back to earth. Japan s idea is to use a power chain to capture the debris.
