PAME Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment

UNEP, through its GRID facility at Arendal, continues its support to the Arctic Environment Protection Strategy (AEPS) by cooperating with the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP), the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna Programme (CAFF), the programme on Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) and the AEPS indigenous people programme.

Arctic 347. On 19 September 1996, at Ottawa, Canada, eight Arctic States (Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russian Federation, Sweden and United States) signed the Declaration on the Establishment of the Arctic Council. The Council, consisting of the eight member nations, will also have Permanent Participants representing the majority of indigenous peoples in the region, and is open to the participation of non Arctic States and intergovernmental organizations as observers.
