Most coastal urban centres do not have a municipal policy for solid waste management

The main land based sources of marine litter are municipal landfills (waste dumps) located on the coast, riverine transport of waste from landfills and other sources, discharges of untreated municipal sewage and storm water, industrial facilities, medical waste and tourism (recreational visitors, beach goers).

Coastal urban centres are generating annually 30 to 40 million tonnes of municipal solid waste.

Similarly, burning municipal solid waste to recover energy produces trace amounts of mercury and dioxins.

Municipal waste water discharges are one of the most significant threats to coastal environments worldwide.

Then we would have an anaerobic digester, which could deal with all the biodegradable waste from the local area, turn that into heat for the greenhouse and electricity to feed back into the grid.

And so what does that mean, that it's biodegradable and biocompatible?

The project attracted 600,000 from a private company that was involved in the solid waste recycling programme and in producing fertilizer from biodegradable refuse, as well as in recycling of plastic, glass and paper for sale.

Given that most of these items are not biodegradable, and are not recycled, plastics waste is building up with serious environmental consequences. While governments have begun to implement new (and often quite strict) regulations aimed at managing plastics waste for example, China banned lightweight plastic shopping bags in 2008 they are inadequate to address the world s growing plastics waste problem.

Furthermore, municipal services have a reduced capacity for dealing with waste matter, because of a shortage of equipment and lack of spare parts.

I mentioned it briefly at the beginning the protein is biodegradable and biocompatible.

Being biodegradable, these raw materials did not produce by products that were eco hostile.

Shoes for Nike, where the uppers are polyesters, infinitely recyclable, the bottoms are biodegradable soles.

In developing countries, many city authorities are unable to collect and transport more than a third of the solid waste generated due to limited municipal budgets.

Examples include natural fibres, organic agricultural products, recyclable and biodegradable products or sustainably produced forest products.

In addition, the programme has contributed to environmental health in refugee camps by upgrading water, sewage and solid waste management infrastructures and integrating them with municipal and regional systems.

Rehabilitation of the Gaza municipal waste water treatment plant was delayed by accidental damage to a treatment pond and the need to retender the contract completion was expected soon.

(d) The fact that biofuels are biodegradable, and are ideal for inland waterways and other environmentally sensitive areas.
