Another challenge facing all countries is the need to integrate chemical safety issues into broader development strategies and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

The Syrian Arab Republic has also committed itself to the national chemical safety plan which incorporates an action plan for improving the management of chemical substances in Syria by means of a number of measures consistent with international requirements.

These participants have been drawn from a wide range of sectors with an interest in chemical safety, including agriculture, environment, health, industry, labour and science.

Since the GHS addresses several sectors (transport, consumers occupational health and safety, environment), its effective implementation requires significant efforts from Member States for amending many existing legal texts concerning chemical safety in each sector, or enacting new legislation.

Time will also be needed for classifying chemical products according to the new criteria, issuing new material safety data sheets, training workers and raising consumers' awareness.

The Department further informed the Board that it had taken a number of initiatives to address speeding violations, including instituting a scrupulous drivers' licensing programme, implementing the CarLog system, promulgating safety guidelines and conducting safety awareness campaigns such as the annual safety week observed at all missions.
