Adaptation to climate change involves more than merely the application of a particular technology.

Mr. Richard Klein, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany, and UNFCCC consultant, presented the draft background paper on Technology to understand and manage climate risks .

Subject to the availability of funds, UNIDO will continue to expand its activities in matchmaking, partnership building, barrier removal, climate friendly technology transfer and adaptation to climate change.

Mr. Klein noted that adaptation to climate change involves more than merely the application of a particular technology.

Mr. Moussa Sanon, Burkina Faso, presented a case study on transfer of technology and capacity building for coping with climate variability.

Examples include technology for conservation and sustainable use such as resilience of ecosystems, and adaptive capacity and technology that makes use of genetic resources such as crops with higher resistance against extreme climate events.

Financial support for the organization of the seminar was provided by the Governments of Canada and Norway, and the Climate Technology Initiative (CTI).

Mr. Yamil Bonduki, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), presented an overview of the UNDP handbook on Conducting Technology Needs Assessments for Climate Change.

Unfortunately, little progress had been made in the areas of debt mitigation for middle income countries, climate change and the transfer of technology.

The workshop included a particular focus on identifying good practices in international science and technology cooperation in the areas of energy and climate change.

Consideration of the assessment report of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as it relates to actions to tackle ozone depletion At its twenty fifth meeting, the Open ended Working Group heard a presentation by the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that included the ozone related suggestions contained in the special report on climate and ozone issues.

Mr. Klein highlighted some issues outlined in the draft paper, including concepts and definitions of adaptation to climate change implications for developing and transferring technology a proposed conceptual framework for addressing technologies for planned adaptation to climate variability and change and policy issues.

He also mentioned the special report by the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on ozone and climate issues, which made clear reference to the significant contribution to climate protection that had been made by the Parties to the Montreal Protocol through the phase out of ozone depleting substances.

Institutionally, most Parties initially assigned a governmental body that is in charge of science and technology or meteorology to be responsible for climate change at country level.

Detailed needs in science and technology capacity building in the broad area of climate change and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have also been drawn up by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technical Advice of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The special report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel concluded that the reductions in ozone depleting substances being implemented under the Montreal Protocol had and would continue to have substantial benefits for the global climate system.

Climate Science or Climate Evangelism?

Now I've come to the conclusion after spending a lot of time in this climate change world that we don't have a problem of economics, technology and public policy.
