The alarming UNEP report on marine debris only heightens our concern over the ever growing accumulation of non biodegradable debris in the marine and coastal environments.

As debris increase, the probability of a satellite that is still operating normally being hit by debris becomes higher, thereby damaging or destroying an investment worth millions of US dollars.

The Subcommittee noted that the United States had endorsed the IADC space debris mitigation guidelines and that its domestic agencies were implementing debris mitigation practices consistent with the IADC guidelines.

The Subcommittee had also made significant progress on space debris mitigation, having agreed on a two year workplan to develop a document based on the IADC space debris mitigation guidelines.

NASA is considering firing atmospheric gases to reduce the speed of the debris so that it would de orbit. Europe is looking at launching a satellite with a large net to capture the debris and it back to earth. Japan s idea is to use a power chain to capture the debris.

Man made sources of debris included anything that had been put into orbit and was no longer useful, most debris being pieces smaller than 10 centimetres in diameter or tiny particles.

Furthermore, in order to address the problem of the increasing pollution caused by space debris, implementation of the space debris mitigation guidelines formulated by the Inter Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) should continue and the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee should proceed with its initiative to develop a complementary set of mitigation guidelines.
