You can take a Harvard educated Ivy League economist, stick him in charge of Argentina. He still crashes the country because he doesn't understand how the rules have changed.

India has been so deeply mired in political paralysis that the Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen recently said that the country has fallen from being the second best to the second worst South Asian country, and that it is currently no match for China on social indicators. This is a damning comment on a country that held such promise just a short time ago.

And as an economist, we can also look at that side of the story.

Let a journalist call an economics professor for his view on whether free trade with country X or Y is a good idea. We can be fairly certain that the economist, like the vast majority of the profession, will be enthusiastic in his support of free trade.

So I decided to do the experiment that I would have loved The Economist to do with me.

The issue is not merely one of fairness. According to the Belgian economist Robert Triffin, an international monetary system based on a national currency is inherently unstable, owing to the resulting tensions among the inevitably divergent interests of the issuing country and the international system as a whole.

As The Economist noted succinctly, Poland is not a country hitherto known for championing animal rights. Indeed, it is hypocritical that hunting for sport and unsupervised home slaughtering continue to be permitted, whereas shechita, which is carried out by experienced people according to well established procedures, is not.

But then along came a lowly economist, who had children himself, and he used the expensive and complicated treatment.

And worst of all, it just came out three weeks ago, many of you have seen it, The Economist.

Another notable economist, Theodore Schultz, in 1974 won the Nobel prize for demonstrating that farmers are efficient, but poor.
