As was the case previously, only three courtrooms were available for nine ongoing trials this additional courtroom has facilitated steady progress in all ongoing cases and is an important element of the Tribunal's completion strategy.

At present, our focus is to ensure in this respect that the cases of six more accused are ready to commence trial in 2006, subject to readiness of the defence and the availability of courtroom space.

On the other hand, other factors which may contribute to making the end of 2009 feasible as a date for finishing trials include the entry of new guilty pleas and the possible construction of a fourth courtroom.

The issue of the viability of building a fourth courtroom remains on the table and the Report of the Working Group on Speeding up Trials and the cost benefit analysis of the Registrar are being closely studied.

To enable maximum utilization of resources and in the interest of efficiency, trials are conducted either in morning and afternoon shifts in the same courtroom (shift system) or at the same time as other trials (twin tracking system).

Thanks to the full use of the nine ad litem judges working with the nine permanent judges, as well as a fourth courtroom funded by the Governments of Norway and the United Kingdom, the output has continued to increase.

Everyone is working extremely hard the judges, prosecution and defence counsel, interpreters, court reporters, courtroom officers, witness protection personnel and all other staff members who more indirectly, but not less importantly, contribute to the smooth running of our cases.

Therefore, although there are advantages to the consideration of a fourth courtroom in terms of increasing court time and reducing the length of the small cases, further considerations are still necessary to fully assess the viability of the project.
