Crime prevention and control the challenge of the last quarter of the century was the theme of the Fifth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, held in Geneva from 1 to 12 September 1975.

The Eighth Congress disseminated information on criminal justice computer networks provisions for seizing the financial proceeds of organized crime and examining bank records and the growing body of experience relating to the link between crime control and socio economic development.

22.26 The activities in this sector are implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in support of programme 13, International drug control, crime prevention and criminal justice, of the biennial programme plan for the period 2006 2007.

The overarching objective is to facilitate policymaking on issues related to drug control, crime and terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, monitoring of the implementation of the United Nations drug control conventions and the follow up to the twentieth special session of the General Assembly, as well as the application of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice.

8. Calls upon the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme and the United Nations International Drug Control Programme to work closely with the Institute

Consideration should be given to updating the United Nations Manual on the Prevention and Control of Computer Related Crime and the development of related training tools.
