In the last two months of the year, the dollar experienced a sharp depreciation of 10 per cent, contributing to the overall moderate foreign currency exchange impact for the year.

In the short term, dollar depreciation does not affect supply and demand, but it does affect speculation and investment in oil futures markets. As the dollar declines, commodities including oil attract investors.

In fact, as China pursues structural reforms aimed at ensuring its continued development, forced depreciation is about the last thing it needs. It would also be highly problematic for the global economy.

To avert a disorderly fall, short term macroeconomic management requires officially engineered depreciation through administrative methods and restraints on external borrowing. A depreciated rupee should help revive Indian exports and lift growth.

After the restructurings, almost all debtor countries experienced an economic recovery and regained external viability (also due to real exchange rate depreciation), although in a context of more favourable global economic conditions.
