Statistics were gathered in Benin by the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Analysis.

In cooperation with the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Monitoring and Research Division mobilized a network of national statistics offices to collect urban statistics.

The expert group meeting endorsed the view that the revision on industrial statistics should be undertaken within a broad economic statistics programme.

The report draws from the recent publication, The World's Women Progress in Statistics, produced by the Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Likewise, at OECD, the Statistics Directorate maintains its own industrial databases on structural statistics for industry and services and statistics by economic size class. Moreover, other directorates at OECD also maintain related databases.

The Statistics Division, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics of China, organized the International Workshop on Economic Census in Beijing in July 2005.

Worldwide availability of statistics on economic activity, employment and unemployment is still not very satisfactory.

Therefore, it is recommended that international agencies strengthen their efforts and coordination in rendering technical assistance to developing countries in the area of economic statistics, including industrial statistics.

On the areas covered by disability statistics, 58.4 per cent have statistics dealing with the prevalence and incidence of disability 72.6 per cent have statistics on the types of disabilities and 55.8 per cent have statistics broken down by gender, age, background, social and economic situation and geographical location.

The workshop also had meaningful discussions about the subject of building an integrated economic statistics programme.

17.20 Responsibility for the implementation of this subprogramme rests with the Statistics and Economic Projections Division.

There is a tendency to focus on things that are easier to measure, like economic growth statistics.

The strategic priority of the Statistics Division for the biennium 2006 2007 is the strengthening of international coordination on the production of socio economic statistics at the country, regional and global level.

Existing standards on industrial statistics have addressed industrial activities in terms of the creation of economic value added.

They agreed that the revision should be seen as a part of building an integrated economic statistics programme.

The consistency of the environmental and economic information of SNA add considerable value to both the environmental and economic information and improve the quality of both statistics.

Sheng Yunyun, spokesman of National Bureau of Statistics and head of National Economic Statistics Division said that, in July, the part index number of national economy slowed relatively but still operated in the reasonable range.

The major international organizations operating in the area of industrial statistics are the Statistics Division of the Secretariat, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Eurostat.

Harmonizing environment statistics and environmental economic accounting concepts, definitions and classifications would introduce statistical checks and balances in the data and produce consistent data systems from individual sets of environment statistics across time and countries.

In collaboration with the Economic Commission for Europe, UNODC organized a meeting in Geneva on crime statistics in November 2004.

Since that time, the issues of sex disaggregated statistics and gender indicators have been comprehensively and ably addressed by the Statistics Division, all five of the regional economic commissions and a number of other United Nations entities.

Therefore, it is recommended that international agencies formulate and implement a coordinated work programme on data dissemination with the objective of creating a single portal for economic statistics, including industrial statistics, that provides access to unified international databases.

The Committee should foster coordination, integration and complementarity of programmes in environmental economic accounting and related statistics among international agencies and countries.

Moreover, United Nations regional commissions, such as the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, conduct workshops related to industrial statistics.
