Before using any electronic means of data interchange, the Registrar shall ensure that the electronic data interchange system is capable of ensuring authentication and confidentiality of the information.

This will entail maintaining electronic data interchange standards (United Nations Directories for Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN EDIFACT)), extending the work of the Organization on electronic codes and developing new e business standards.

Another step will be the transition toward electronic data interchange (EDI), wherever economically feasible.

Included in the latter category was the Model Law on Electronic Commerce, which defined the terms data message and electronic data interchange from a functional perspective.

The Centre for Facilitation of Procedures and Practices for Administration, Commerce and Transport develops and maintains the only international standard for electronic data interchange (Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport) between public administrations and private companies of all economic sectors worldwide.

The required transit and customs management electronic data interchange (EDI) messages should be developed using UN EDIFACT standards.

21. As to the question of electronic commerce, his delegation recalled that UNCITRAL had reached an important milestone by completing the preparation of the Model Law on Legal Aspects of Electronic Data Interchange and Related Means of Communication.

This approach is designed not to tie communication to the use of paper, taking into account that communications are increasingly carried out through means such as electronic data interchange ( EDI ).
