(b) School enrolment rates

Enrolment in secondary schools is made on the basis of an open competition and enrolment a qualification exam in June and an additional August enrolment term.

Depending on the teaching method, the education system consists of two modalities enrolment and non enrolment.

The rapid growth in enrolment since 1994 had led to a proportionately sharp rise in the number of teachers required in Agency schools.

For 1996 the target was 750,000 women members, but it must be pointed out that the enrolment system has encountered a number of difficulties.

Moreover, it also welcomes for enrolment a limited number from abroad and from the United States to make for a balanced educational exposure for all.

10.2 Enrolment of Learners in Schools

The Government established a vocational training course for unemployed young people and also a girls' enrolment project, which aims to raise the enrolment rate of girls, reduce the repeat and drop out rates and raise the number of women teachers in the first stage of basic education.

Between the 1993 1994 and 1997 1998 school years, the number of school buildings increased by 1.2 per cent and the number of schools by 1.4 per cent, while total enrolment increased by 12.2 per cent.

Female enrolment is more than 50 percent.

(f) To ensure girls' enrolment in schools

Female enrolment in middle school and high school rose considerably between 1994 and 1998 but remained significantly lower than male enrolment.

In view of historical trends and projections based on personnel data, the enrolment figures are expected to increase further as an increasing number of staff reach retirement age.

Future projects included raising female enrolment in tertiary institutions and universities and increasing the number of women in decision making positions in both the public and private sectors.

Primary education enrolment is over 91.5 per cent.

The Programme is funded exclusively through enrolment revenues.

Enrolment is also lopsided in favour of boys.

Gender differences in approaches to education are not reflected by indicators that show enrolment rates, the number of male or female pupils attending education programmes or graduating from schools.

The Government also aims for 100 per cent enrolment as part of the MDG targets for 2015, with girls' enrolment at 50 per cent.

In recent years, female enrolment has caught up with male enrolment in 1972, there were 79 females per 100 males at the basic stage.
