Among these efforts, Equatorial Guinea supports the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative proposed by the United Kingdom.

A number of countries, including Equatorial Guinea, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and Uganda, have expressed an interest in hosting the meeting.

The United Nations also continued to help Equatorial Guinea and Gabon mediate a settlement of their dispute over the island of Mbanie.

The Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea were also countries where those in power grossly abused the human rights of their citizens.

In this regard, Equatorial Guinea strongly regrets the failure to take measures against the terrorists who tried to overthrow the established constitutional Government on 6 March 2004 despite identification of nationalities of the terrorists and despite Equatorial Guinea's request to the Governments concerned.

Mr. Esouo Mbengouo (Equatorial Guinea) asked Mr. Morillas Gómez what link there was between the situation in Western Sahara and the phenomenon of immigration across the strait.

The characteristics of the new mercenarism which was prevalent in Africa included the interrelation of traditional mercenary activity with big business, often involved in the extraction of valuable natural resources (e.g. in Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea).

The President On behalf of the General Assembly, I have the honour to welcome to the United Nations His Excellency Mr. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, and to invite him to address the Assembly.

The Committee notes the adoption of the Education Law (1995) and welcomes the establishment of the National University of Equatorial Guinea (1995) and the State party's efforts to increase enrolment rates in primary education, e.g. through the National Plan on Education for All.

In Equatorial Guinea, the integration of women into our development process is receiving the Government's utmost attention through the design of literacy programmes for them and their gradual integration in economic activities and political institutions with a specific percentage reserved for women.

Nchama s appointment was a success for Equatorial Guinea in its long quest to boost its influence in CEMAC. The country has plowed some of its oil money into increasing its contributions to the BEAC, and now reportedly provides 48 of CEMAC s foreign currency reserves.

The Department of Political Affairs continued to provide substantial support to my Special Adviser and Mediator in his effort to help Equatorial Guinea and Gabon find a peaceful settlement to their dispute concerning sovereignty over the islet of Mbanie and delimitation of their land and maritime borders.
