In 1946 Kim Il Sung had declared that the country in general, and women in particular, must be liberated from the yoke of feudalism and colonialism.

Many of these business leaders would have preferred to stay out of politics but Russia s poor education system, economic feudalism, official homophobia, and other festering problems have left them no choice. And Putin himself has become an insufferably vulgar embarrassment.

Unlike in Germany, Japan had no Hitler or Nazi party on which to blame their wartime atrocities. What needed to be purged instead, postwar reformers believed, was a specific form of Japanese militarism, rooted in emperor worship, the samurai tradition, authoritarian feudalism, and so on.

Today, acting against scientific evidence is politically expedient it offers left wing and right wing politicians alike an opportunity to court an anti elite, populist image. But this approach endangers public health and the planet, and some scientists are beginning to worry about the possibility of a new dark age of political feudalism.
