So the rate of reading the genetic code has changed.

The first one actually contains within it this code for interpreting the rest of the genetic code.

So, there are four major watermarks all over 1,000 base pairs of genetic code.

Transposons are just small pieces of DNA that randomly insert in the genetic code.

Those are the letters of genetic code, the 25,000 genes you've got written in your DNA.

This is what they typically talk about the genetic code this is what they're talking about.

It also is the first species to have its own website encoded in its genetic code.

Already it is possible to sequence the entire genetic code of a bacterium in under four hours.

But our genetic code still carries the selfish and aggressive instincts that were of survival advantage in the past.

What I'm going to tell you about in my 18 minutes is how we're about to switch from reading the genetic code to the first stages of beginning to write the code ourselves.

So to keep the DNA organized and regulate access to the genetic code, it's wrapped around these purple proteins or I've labeled them purple here.

And of course it's the DNA that counts, so here's all the A, T, Gs and Cs that make up your genetic code, and give you all your charming characteristics.

For example, epigenetics the study of heritable modifications of the genome that do not involve alterations to the genetic code is on the rise. And the many kinds of small RNA molecules are increasingly recognized as forming a regulatory layer above the genome.

So the team actually developed a new code within the code within the code.

It is too soon to discount genetics, however, because the science of epigenetics the study of mechanisms for turning genes on and off, thus changing the way a cell develops without altering the genetic code is gaining traction. Indeed, the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka for revolutionizing scientists understanding of how cells develop by reprogramming DNA and cells without altering their genetic structure.

And not only do these genetic males mate with other males, they actually have the capacity to lay eggs even though they're genetic males.

So we saw how genetic information is carried.
