Ice and Glaciers

The glaciers are actually leaving us.

One of my favorite glaciers, the Sólheimajökull.

Glaciers are very important for the life on earth.

And there's a volcano behind, which has glaciers at the very top.

95 percent of the glaciers in the world are retreating or shrinking.

Oceans come and go. Mountains come and go. Glaciers come and go.

I have swum in front of glaciers which have retreated so much.

The study will enable to assess recent changes and determine the stability of glaciers.

The 1990s were the warmest decade on record, forcing glaciers and Arctic ice to retreat.

Here is some picture of Antarctica and a picture of Olympus Mons, very similar features, glaciers.

And so kind of thinking about scale, my most recent obsession is actually with glaciers of course.

And so I actually live in Canada now, so I've been visiting one of my local glaciers.

Much thicker coatings of aerosols at the lower ends of glaciers might explain the tendency in several glaciers, noted in the Indian report, to become narrower in the middle, forming two distinct parts. The slowdown in the retreat of the snout of glaciers could, therefore, be a consequence of the very rapid rise of human population in the hills and desertification caused by overgrazing purely local factors that boost aerosol levels.

And that's why we enjoy looking at glaciers and oceans, and contemplating the Earth from outside its perimeters, etc.

Aerial surveys of glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula and the Amundsen Sea regions were carried out in 2002 and 2004.

The Himalayan glaciers have not stopped losing mass, although they are losing it at a somewhat slower rate than before. Evidence collected on 466 glaciers by the Indian Space Applications Center from 1962 to 2004 shows a 21 loss of glacier area and a 30.8 of glacier volume.

Now it's really hard to grasp the scale of these places, because as the glaciers one of the things is that places like Alaska and Greenland are huge, they're not normal landscapes but as the glaciers are retreating, they're also deflating, like air is being let out of a balloon.

So, for example, the Kyrgyz Republic is one of the principal repositories of glaciers and suppliers of fresh water in the region.

We do not know how much of the recent rise is caused by human activities. Some of the recent rise, associated with the shrinking of glaciers, is not caused by human activities, since the glaciers have been shrinking for hundreds of years while human activities became significant only in the last century.

Anyway, last year, I heard about the Himalayas and the melting of the and the melting of the glaciers because of climate change.

While glaciers that cover more than five square kilometers have lost 12 of their mass, those under one square kilometer have lost 38 percent. Applying the overall ratio of mass lost to area covered, this means that the smallest (and most numerous) Himalayan glaciers lost up to 57 of their mass between 1960 and 2004.

95 percent of the glaciers in the world are retreating or shrinking, and that's because the precipitation patterns and the temperature patterns are changing.

And this one's particularly interesting, because, of all the glaciers in North America, it receives the highest volume of human traffic in a year.

Interferometric studies were carried out over glaciers in Patagonia with SIR C and X SAR data which were acquired in one day repeat intervals.

The one glacier up in Greenland that puts more ice into the global ocean than all the other glaciers in the northern hemisphere combined is the Ilulissat Glacier.

And so glaciers are these magnificent beings, and there's lots of reasons to be obsessed with them, but what I'm particularly interested in is in human glacier relations.

And these cameras are positioned on rocks on the sides of the glaciers, and they look in on the glacier from permanent, bedrock positions, and they watch the evolution of the landscape.

And my urging is that when we think about environmental issues that we remember that it's not just about melting glaciers and ice caps, but it's also about our children as well.

The data is fundamental to our understanding of contemporary processes of global relevance such as ozone depletion, atmospheric pollution, climate change, the melting of ice shelves and glaciers and sea level rise.

During both flights a near real time analysis was carried out over glaciers to determine the accumulation and ablation areas and estimate glacier mass balance, important parameters for climate research and hydrology.

And with a population increasing as quickly as it is, and with the water supply from these glaciers because of climate change decreasing so much, I think we have a real risk of instability.

Experts attending the event warned that little was being done to monitor the state of glaciers in the Himalayas, which were melting due to global warming and thereby increasing the risk of major floods.

But unfortunately, 95 percent of the glaciers in the Arctic are also receding right now to the point that the ice is ending up on land and not injecting any ice back into the ecosystem.

That theory sounds as general and fundamental as the theory that global warming is melting glaciers and raising sea levels around the world. Rising sea levels would explain a lot of geological and economic events.

Examples of other effects include diminishing freshwater supply in many regions, due to extended droughts and as a result of the melting of high altitude glaciers and the decrease in snow cover in mountain areas.

Now, Africa is the most tropical continent on the planet about 85 percent of it lies between Cancer and Capricorn and there aren't a lot of glaciers here, except on the high mountains here in East Africa.

In these images we see ice from enormous glaciers, ice sheets that are hundreds of thousands of years old breaking up into chunks, and chunk by chunk by chunk, iceberg by iceberg, turning into global sea level rise.

The latest IPCC report describes our current predicament with disturbing clarity global temperatures are climbing, mountain glaciers and polar ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and more severe.

Heat waves, droughts, floods, forest fires, retreating glaciers, polluted rivers, and extreme storms buffet the planet at a dramatically rising rate, owing to human activities. Our 70 trillion per year global economy is putting unprecedented pressures on the natural environment.

There are numerous other examples of similar shenanigans by Working Group II. Yet, aside from a grudging admission that its predictions about Himalayan glaciers were poorly substantiated, the IPCC has yet to acknowledge much less apologize for any of the lapses.

Only more research focused on the differences between glaciers in heavily populated areas and those in uninhabited ones like Siachen will answer this question definitively. But relying upon population growth and desertification to prolong their lives would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.

But the IPCC also attracted controversy when it admitted in 2010 that a volume on the consequences of climate change erroneously suggested that, at current rates of melting, all of the glaciers in the Himalayas would disappear by 2035, rather than within a few centuries.
