This is way more difficult than, let's say, finding a needle in a haystack, because at least, you know, the needle is still something you can physically put your fingers on.

A preliminary analysis indicated a significant larger number of detections compared to the predictions from the ESA MASTER model (for the Haystack radar (USA) the MASTER model underpredicts slightly the number of detections).

The Australian defense authorities now coordinating the search still say that to discover wreckage probably lying 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) deep, on so remote a seabed, will be like finding a needle in a haystack. And any subsequent recovery operation will obviously still be a huge challenge.

After all, the objective to identify a few terrorists hiding among millions of law abiding citizens, before they commit a violent act is the equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack. The recognition of the flawed logic behind reinstating border controls is probably why police officials have remained guarded in discussing the issue.
