A Mania for Diagnosing Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is nicknamed the CEO disease.

Now, this is starting to happen in transistors.

Whole different paradigm transistors came out of the woodwork.

We went to the fourth paradigm, transistors, and finally integrated circuits.

But as far as being a performer, I'm also diagnosed bipolar.

Do you know that bipolar disorder is nicknamed the CEO disease?

Organizations created in the bipolar world must adjust to the current reality.

Now, in a few years time, by 2015, we will shrink transistors so much.

And these transistors are behaving essentially just like ion channels behave in the brain.

A quadrillion transistors is almost the same as the number of neurons in your brain.

We ought to be able to find the gene for bipolar there's a relationship.

Transistors are getting smaller to allow this to happen, and technology has really benefitted from that.

The way that silicon behaves, the fact that you can build transistors, is a purely quantum phenomenon.

You can make both p and n type semiconductors, which means you can make transistors out of them.

Now, what's happening is that as transistors are getting smaller and smaller and smaller, they no longer behave like this.

In my own practice, my colleagues and I have encountered patients who reported that they were previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder, despite lacking a history of manic or hypomanic episodes. To be sure, we have also seen patients seeking treatment for depression who really did have bipolar disorder.

Moore's Law was just the last part of that, where we were shrinking transistors on an integrated circuit, but we had electro mechanical calculators, relay based computers that cracked the German Enigma Code, vacuum tubes in the 1950s predicted the election of Eisenhower, discreet transistors used in the first space flights and then Moore's Law.

And more than that, it's a confection of different ideas, the idea of plastic, the idea of a laser, the idea of transistors.

And we take it for granted now, that each of these machines has billions of transistors, doing billions of cycles per second without failing.

The results of our study are consistent with prior studies suggesting possible problems with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. With the greater number of medications approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder, along with multiple reports cautioning clinicians against under diagnosis, it appears that over diagnosis has become a greater problem than under diagnosis.

You can make him bipolar, or as someone said, a you can change his homeostatic drives, or whatever you want to call them.

Just be manic enough in which investors who are looking for entrepreneurs that have this kind of spectrum you know what I'm talking about not maybe full bipolar, but they're in the bipolar spectrum where on one side, maybe you think you're Jesus, and on the other side maybe they just make you a lot of money.

This bias is reinforced by the marketing message of pharmaceutical companies to physicians, which has emphasized research on delayed diagnosis and under recognition of bipolar disorder, possibly sensitizing clinicians accordingly. The campaign against under recognition has probably resulted in some anxious, agitated, and or irritable depressed patients who complain of insomnia and racing thoughts being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder.

We believe that the increased availability of medications that have been approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder might be influencing clinicians who are unsure whether or not a patient has bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder to err on the side of diagnosing the disorder that is responsive to medication.

The clinical implications of the failure to recognize bipolar disorder in depressed patients include the under prescription of mood stabilizing medications, and an increased risk of rapid cycling swings between manic and depressive phases. But, perhaps as a consequence of concerted efforts to improve the recognition of bipolar disorder, during the past few years we have observed the emergence of an opposite phenomenon over diagnosis.

Today, the global picture is different. Sparked by Poland s Solidarity movement, the Warsaw Pact dissolved, the Soviet Union disintegrated, and the bipolar world and its East West divide vanished.

They're faster, so you've got exponential growth in the speed of transistors, so the cost of a cycle of one transistor has been coming down with a halving rate of 1.1 years.

Fortunately, what motivates most significant advances in knowledge is not profit, but the pursuit of knowledge itself. This has been true of all of the transformative discoveries and innovations DNA, transistors, lasers, the Internet, and so on.

But, either way, the bipolar political system to which Italians were getting accustomed is unlikely to survive unscathed. The left right divide will become easier for opportunistic politicians to cross, and perhaps a new centrist party will emerge.

So without that curiosity driven understanding of the structure of atoms, which led to this rather esoteric theory, quantum mechanics, then we wouldn't have transistors, we wouldn't have silicon chips, we wouldn't have pretty much the basis of our modern economy.

So here's the specifications, just as if you were to make up a spec sheet for it 170 quadrillion transistors, 55 trillion links, emails running at two megahertz itself, 31 kilohertz text messaging, 246 exabyte storage. That's a big disk.

The most advanced transistors today are at 65 nanometers, and we've seen, and I've had the pleasure to invest in, companies that give me great confidence that we'll extend Moore's Law all the way down to roughly the 10 nanometer scale.

Mood stabilizers are the treatment of choice, and, depending on the medication, they can produce potentially significant health complications affecting renal, endocrine, hepatic, immunologic, or metabolic function. Thus, over diagnosing bipolar disorder can unnecessarily expose patients to serious side effects of medication.
