In this context, and after consultations with the Office of the Secretary General, Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 2004, and H.E. Mr. Cherif Rahmani, Minister of Environment of Algeria, have been appointed honorary Sspokespersons for the IYDD.

The workshop was introduced by Mr. Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director of UNEP, and presentations were made by Nobel Prize winner Mario Molina, former UNEP Executive Director Mustafa Tolba, and the Honorary Chief Officer of the Multilateral Fund Omar El Arini.

In order to bring higher visibility to the IYDD, Professor Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and H.E. Mr. Cherif Rahmani, Minister of Land Planning and Environment of Algeria, have been nominated as Honorary Spokesperson and Ambassador for the Year, respectively.

Her delegation supported efforts to ensure the success of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, which would raise awareness of the impact of desertification on sustainable livelihoods, and applauded the nomination of Wangari Maathi, Nobel Laureate, as an honorary spokesperson for the event.

In this context, and after consultations with the Office of the Secretary General, Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 2004 and Deputy Minister of Environment of Kenya, and Cherif Rahmani, Minister of Environment of Algeria, have been named honorary spokespersons for the International Year of Deserts and Desertification.

It held that the classification of the honorary board as an arbitral tribunal or a mere disciplinary board of the association was not to be inferred from the wording of its statutes, but rather from the fact that the board's decisions could have binding effect on the parties concerned.

After an adverse decision of the honorary board, the claimant (the association) applied to the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt to have the board's interim decision on jurisdiction as well as its final decision on the merits set aside according to 1040 and 1059 ZPO, based on articles 16 and 34 MAL.

According to the statutes of an association, all disputes between the association and one of its members had to be referred to an honorary board which was considered to be an arbitral tribunal for purposes of 1034 et seq. of the German Code of Civil Procedure (hereinafter ZPO), based on articles 10 et seq. MAL.

In addition, on Wednesday, 14 September 2005, from 11.45 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. (venue to be advised), Mrs. Annan will be the honorary chairperson of an information briefing for spouses of Heads of State Government on topics related to the Millennium Development Goals, organized with the assistance of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
