In 2002, 13,295 people were admitted to inpatient care and day hospitalization, 5,565 (42.1 ) of them were women.

Once registered for the scheme they qualify for a basic insurance package, consisting of primary medical care, specialist medical care, hospitalisation and prescription drugs.

This data reflects an increase compared to 2001, when 13,014 persons were admitted to inpatient care and day hospitalization, 5,490 (42.1 ) of them were women.

Inpatient care is provided by the Care Units for the Elderly, which are entities of private law, of a non profit or profit oriented character.

The personnel of medical institutions are obliged to provide services to foreign nationals transferred for urgent hospitalisation, as well as to minors children, irrespective of the legality of their residence in Greece.

In addition to the information provided in the previous report on the treatment and care of AIDS patients, mention should be made of inpatient hospital care which is provided whenever it is clinically indicated.

In medical schools, however, the curriculum in both the basic science and clinical apprenticeship years places the greatest emphasis on understanding the biology of disease processes and high technology treatments. The illness experience gets less and less pedagogic attention as the student progresses from classroom to inpatient ward and clinic.

The attorney has also lodged a special complaint with the Egyptian Minister of the Interior, the Chief Public Prosecutor and the Director General of the Prison Institutions, alleging improper treatment of the complainant during his hospitalisation, including being chained to the bed and rendered immobile on medical grounds, and being returned to prison prior to recuperation.
