It is intolerant of those who speak their minds

Certainly, the failure of the peace process in the 1990 s, followed by the coming of the second Intifada, appears to have encouraged the radicalization of Israel s extremes while discouraging moderates. And the revival of religious parties in a country created by avowed secularists opened the way for a more politically powerful but also more nationalistic and intolerant setting.

Such measures have the appearance of a (seemingly self contradictory) program to force men and women to be free. We can either go on bringing out or emphasizing the dogmatic and intolerant aspects of our faith, or we can go back to the rabbis. BERLIN As thousands of refugees pour into Europe to escape the horrors of war, with many dying along the way, a different sort of tragedy has played out in many of the European Union s newest member states. The states known collectively as Eastern Europe, including my native Poland, have revealed themselves to be intolerant, illiberal, xenophobic, and incapable of remembering the spirit of solidarity that carried them to freedom a quarter century ago.
